Providing factual and current information
These coordinators will only represent qualified, talented bariatric and plastic surgeons. These Surgeons are committed to providing quality patient care in modern, clean, state of the art facilities. International surgeons will provide quality care, and perform procedures in a facility, that meets U. S. standards. These surgeons have impeccable reputations, impressive credentials and are highly regarded among their peers.
Why is an Organization like PCCOE needed?
Morbid obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. PCCOE found that while unethical practices of coordinators and the representation of under qualified surgeons have always existed; the recent surge of patients seeking surgery has caused an explosion of some surgeons performing a very high number of surgeries with many not willing and/or able to provide necessary aftercare and follow up. This usually results in a poor outcome or even dangerous health risks. Huge profits and virtual “surgery mills” have seen a rampant increase in poor care with sometimes devastating results. This practice of unethical doctors represented by patient coordinators looking to make a quick profit at the expense of putting patient's lives in danger must stop!
More Bad News
Even more troubling is the recent practice known as “Rent a Doc”, which has become more and more popular in Mexico due to the high profits generated by this practice. Some hospitals and patient referral groups have created what is similar to the US HMO system. However, worse than the U.S. HMO system, this practice has destroyed the right of the patient to work directly with their doctor. They have taken all the control away from the doctors and patients and put it in the hands of the hospital administrators and referral companies who see a huge profit. Even worse, the patient coordination/referral company is the party that assesses the patient's condition. The “Rent a Doc” surgeons that perform the surgery do not meet or talk to the patient prior to surgery. In fact, the doctor doesn't even review the patient's health history nor evaluate the course of treatment or if the patient even meets the criteria to have surgery. Usually the reason for this is they often will bait and switch. They will dangle a surgeon with great credentials, etc to sell you, and then when you show up for surgery, you find that your surgeon is “unavailable” and someone else will be doing your surgery. Follow up care? You will need to go through them for that also. Good luck! They have your money. These hospitals and the groups engaging in this practice have put profit far above patient care and quality.
